Back in 2014, I read and reviewed a trilogy by Irene N. Watts called Escape from Berlin. The first book, Good-bye, Marianne, tells the story of Marianne Kohn, 11, a young Jewish girl living in Berlin, with her mother. Her father has been missing since before Kristallnacht and her mother is working in an orphanage. It was through her... I liked this story a lot. Marianne Kohn is an ll year old Jewish girl who travelled on the Kindertransport from Germany to England during the second world war. While fictional, it shows us the sorrow, fear, and homesickness real children experienced in their placements. Some of these places are positively creepy. The black and white,... I really like this, which does a nice job of putting a human face on the refugee experience. Sometimes the tiny smudgy illustrations are a little difficult to decipher, but it didn't hold me back much. Really good.
