Manni ühe kuulsama teose «Surm Veneetsias» (1912) peategelane on austatud, ent juba vananev professor von Achenbach.

More About Surm Veneetsias

Images and perceptions which might otherwise be easily dispelled by a glance, a laugh, an exchange of comments, concern him unduly, they sink into mute depths, take on significance, become experiences, adventures, emotions. Thomas Mann, Death in Venice // his steps were dictated by the demon who delights in destroying manfs reason and dignity. Thomas Mann, Death in Venice // His yearning for new and faraway places, his desire for freedom, relief and oblivion was as he admitted to himself, an urge to flee-an urge to get away from his work, from the everyday site of a cold, rigid, and passionate servitude. Thomas Mann, Death in Venice //
I find this a difficult work to review. On the one hand, Im awed by the complexity of the narrative, its haunting imagery, the richness of the symbolism and the layers of meaning which Mann was able to give such a short work. On the other hand, a plot involving an older man becoming obsessed with and stalking a beautiful young boy is... Lovers of dense prose In each heart there are unrequited desires; desires that hibernate for years only to awaken after the last days of summer have passed into the time when "To love that well which thou must leave ere long" is the only option. While on vacation aging writer Gustav von Aschenbach beholds the beauty of Tadzio, a teenage boy vacationing with...
